Airlines tend to overbook passengers in order to assure that cancellations do not affect the capacity of passengers and allows the airlines to have a full capacity plane. Airlines do not work by first come first go, they offer substance rewards to the customer who relinquishes their seat on that particular flight. Overbooking now becomes your best chance to save even more money on the ticket price and sometimes they throw in extra incentives for the good faith gesture on your part. 

What Discounts Arise from Overbooking

The airlines may throw in a free ticket for another travel adventure or will upgrade your present seat to first class. Upgrading to first class becomes available because generally first class never overbooks and this allows economy passengers a step up to first class free of charge. In some instances, negotiations for deals that help your gesture as far as delay time and do you need a hotel room for the night. Sometimes airlines offer gift cards for restaurants and other areas available in the airport lounges.

Overbooking: Do Airlines Receive Penalties?

Overbooking in the United States and elsewhere has no legal ramifications. In European countries, a guide has been established penalizing airlines for overbooking flights. Overbooking in most cases does not affect the customer, but the loss due to required guidelines forbidding overbooking affects the airlines. Airlines that choose to overbook flights usually do not have problem-securing volunteers to forfeit their seat with the incentives available to the passenger. 

Are the Rewards Beneficial for the Passenger?

Yes, in most cases. If the passenger is in no hurry to arrive at the destination at a certain time, waiting for another flight and receiving rewards such as a free ticket or other discounts will more than likely out weight the delay. A lot of controversy over overbooking arises from airlines and customers. Airlines protect themselves from empty seats and passengers worry about losing the flight. Offering rewards and discounts allows the airlines to recover from bad publicity and continue the practice of overbooking flights to insure full flights.
